Meon Valley Leisure Travel: Dubai

Dubai - The Latest Hotspot

Not many places I recommend have something for everyone, but Dubai really does. Sunshine all year round, powder white beaches, coral seas, and a high-tech city itself with lots of variety for those who love to shop and culture for those who feel the need. The desert is a conservationist’s paradise and an experience that will stay with me forever.

The shopping is amazing in itself. There is a souk for everything, gold, diamonds, spices, vegetables and fake anything. These authentic Arabian markets are definitely worth the visit, if only to taste the atmosphere. Then there are the shopping malls which are more like all inclusive entertainment centres with cinemas, go-karting, fashion shows and the like. You can drop off the kids and your husband too if necessary and there are always special offers to be had. I have to say that I was tempted and did indulge in a few designer labels for a fraction of the price we pay in the UK.

We spent a couple of days at the Al Maha Desert Retreat owned by the Saudi Royal Family, we got stuck in the desert in a 4x4 dune ride, experienced archery and falconry, learned all about the local habitat and the surprising lengths to which the Saudis go to protect the natural environment.

From where I sat on the torch lit terrace, tucking into my Mediterranean salad of plump red tomatoes, drizzled with olive oil, I could see straight out to the desert night sky and the Bedouin tribesmen passing on the distant horizon. It struck me as one of the most peaceful places on the planet with a view from the God’s table.

Back in Dubai, we stayed at the Royal Mirage – brilliant service and incredible value. Huge pools and terraces overlooking the Gulf of Arabia and whilst it is very close to all the city amenities, and the Wild Wadi Waterpark for the children, it still doesn’t have the feel of a city hotel. If you must, you can still keep in touch with the office as there is only one hour time difference – so no jet lag! For a break it has everything from golf to horse racing, power boat racing and skiing, but for me I cannot recommend the cocktails on the beach highly enough!

Karen travelled with Emirates to Dubai, direct flights start from £222 return.
