The Royal Clipper

Star Clipper Tall Ships experience, by Carol Price

As the ship turned into the wind and the sails were raised, she slipped slowly out of port to the music of Vangelis “Chariots of Fire” – one of the most moving moments I have experienced!

After being married to a naval man for over 35 years it was my turn to go to sea!

I was given the wonderful opportunity to spend 7 nights aboard the Royal Clipper sailing around the Caribbean from Barbados.  My only previous sailing experience was a day trip to the Isle of Wight!

I boarded not knowing what to expect, but to my surprise I settled in very quickly to the 5 star life style! My outside cabin with port hole was spacious and well equipped, and with only four desks the ship was easy to navigate around.

The Royal Clipper is the largest of the three ships in the Star Clipper fleet. It carries a maximum of 227 passengers and 106 crew.  It is the largest true fully rigged sailing ship in the world, which sails under canvas whenever possible rather than modern engines. This adds to its character and appeal.  Passengers are invited to assist raise and drop the sails and also take part in climbing the rigging. I had to pass on that one as my champagne might have felt neglected!

The Star Clipper spends six months in the Caribbean and the summer months cruising the Mediterranean.  My itinerary was to cruise around the Windward Islands from Barbados, calling at St Lucia, Antigua, Dominica, St Kitts Iles De Saints and Martinique before returning to Barbados over a 7 night period.  On arrival at each port passengers disembark to spend time on each island on organised tours or self discovery.  The Royal Clipper being smaller than traditional cruise ships has the opportunity to slip in and out of harbours not accessible by the large cruise ships.

Was it for me?  Even though it took me a while to get my ‘sea legs’ the ship, the crew, fellow passengers made this an experience not to be missed. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to cruise and something a little different. But be prepared for the tears it gets you every time!
